VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Illegally dumped garbage is a challenge for the City of Vancouver. Assistant Editor of Straight dot com Miranda Nelson has been tracking the problem for the last few years with her blog: East Van Garbage Watch.
“It is a big problem as anybody who wanders through East Van can tell. Especially near the end of the month when people move out. I have seen mattresses, couches, old beds. It’s ridiculous,” she explains. “We don’t have a large item pick-up in Vancouver like they do in Burnaby and some of the other communities so I think that is part of the problem. There is no easy way if you don’t have a vehicle to get down to the transfer station.”
She says the spot at 58th and Fraser is one of the largest examples. “One of the very first blogs that I did about East Van garbage, I just walked up and down Commercial Drive one day just to look at what was going on in the dumpsters and stuff and it was messy but it was not as bad as this site. This is the worst I have ever seen.”
“It’s gross, and it’s been that way for at least a week, maybe two now,” Nelson adds.
The city has confirmed it is sending an inspector to check out the site.
A person caught illegally dumping material may have to:
- Remove the waste and pay to restore the area
- Repay the City for cleaning and restoration costs if the offender does not remove the waste
- Pay a fine of up to $2,000
You are encouraged to go to the Waste Wizard website to see how you can properly dispose of unwanted items or donate your stuff to charity. If you see anybody abandoning garbage you can call it in to 3-1-1 or contact the city through the VanConnect App.
