VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Air quality advisories remain in effect for most of southern BC as smoke lingers from wildfires including several fires in Washington State.
It was a slow weekend with just 10 new fires were started.
Kevin Skrepnek with the BC Wildfire Service says some BC Crews have now been sent south of the border to help fight the Stickpin fire burning south of Grand Forks.
“Very large incident, so our crews are just working on the north edge of it, which is the area of concern in terms of posing a potential threat of crossing over the international border.”
Right now there are 180 active fires in the province.
The smoke is expected to last at least a few days. “On the negative side of course we are going to have air quality issues,” Skrepnek adds there can be some benefits from the smoke in the air. It can keep the heat from reaching the ground and trap a bit of humidity.
