Do you want more surveillance cameras to help curb gang violence?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems there’s a likely possibility of more surveillance cameras coming to neighbourhoods throughout Metro Vancouver.

While Vancouver police are the latest to install them to help fight gang violence, Abbotsford police have been doing it for some time.

Constable Ian MacDonald says people have been very receptive.

“We find that the citizens of Abbotsford have been supportive of the limited number of times we’ve put cameras into neighbourhoods to act as a deterrent to further criminal activity,” he explains. “You can imagine it’s a preferred choice to being woken up at four o’clock in the morning, either hearing gunshots or conflict, or mayhem out on the street and cars taking off.”

Doug Elford with the Newton Community Association feels as long as the cameras aren’t pointed inside homes, they are a good thing.

“If there [are] known criminals in the area, known people with records in that area, I think it may be something to look at as well,” says Elford. “I know that we’ve called for CCTV placement through the Newton area to deter crime in certain public areas.”

MacDonald says the cameras are not being used to spy on people and the footage is only looked at when it’s needed. He feels there are more cameras out there from ones in people’s cars to personal security for homeowners.
