Big jump in Vancouver hotel prices this summer

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s been a great summer for tourism-related businesses in Vancouver – but not so great for people looking for somewhere to stay.

The Hotels.com data show prices have shot up 11 per cent in Vancouver for the first half of 2015 when compared to last year.

Pradeep Puri with the Westin Grand Vancouver says it’s all thanks to some high profile events hitting the city this summer. “FIFA created the compression in the city and awareness of Vancouver worldwide. A lot of people came in and then there were a couple of American games in the city and that created an even higher profile for Vancouver and American’s came and the loonie [dropped], you know it’s kind of like a perfect storm.”

But Puri expects prices to drop in the next few months. “You know as the leisure travel and the cruise [ship season] is over, corporates will [come] and the usual pattern will follow but I think because of the loonie, we all definitely expect the volumes to be a little higher than previous years for sure.”

An average stay in Vancouver now costs $174 a night – the most expensive hotel rooms in Canada.
