Family and friends remember Kurdi boys in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Two boys and their mother were remembered in Vancouver today, only days after Alan Kurdi’s body washed up on the Turkish shore.

“Alan Kurdi woke up the world. His body on that shore is the outcome of our silence.”

That was the message given as mourners paid their respects.

The love and tears for the young lives lost were paired with calls to action.

“Our system is designed to fail these refugees. Canada has promised to let 10,000 refugees in over the next four years. That doesn’t even make a dent in the amount of refugees who need our support.”

They called out Canada for making a complicated process.

“Kurdish, Arab, Christian, Yazidi and other minorities have been crying out to the world, but nobody listened until Alan’s little body surfaced.”

Speakers gave stories of the young children, read letters from around the world, and spoke some poetry.

“Your mom wouldn’t have put you on the boat unless the water was safer than the land you came from.”

At the front of the service were white balloons, candles, and a picture of Alan and Ghabil smiling, the picture we all wish we had seen instead.
