New Nordstrom store set to open a week from Friday

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Nordstrom store in downtown Vancouver doesn’t open until the 18th, but NEWS 1130 Business Editor Richard Dettman went on a media preview tour today and get a look inside.

The three-storey, 230,000-square-foot fashion emporium is the fourth Nordstrom flagship location but the first outside the US.

The Calgary and Ottawa locations are smaller. Nordstrom’s John Bailey says it isn’t all high-end merchandise, there is overlap with rivals Holt Renfrew and the Hudson’s Bay.

The Bay and Holt’s have been bracing for their rival from Seattle, expanding or heavily renovating their nearby stores. Bailey says Nordstrom will adapt.

“We hope that customers will be vocal with us and they’ll let us know what they like, and perhaps they’ll also let us know where we can make improvements and we’re going to work hard to make those changes in real time.”

It’ll be “game on” a week from Friday.

“We’ve always considered ourselves a broad-based retailer and have always wanted to offer our customers merchandise at a wide-range of price points, and we feel like that’s one of the things that make us different from our competition.”

The store is packed with shopper-attracting style touches, including a full bar right in the middle of a floor of women’s wear.
