Graphic video of grizzly bear killing has many calling for an end to the trophy hunt

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Much like the death of Cecil the Lion on the first of July, the gruesome death of a grizzly bear is again igniting calls for a ban on trophy hunting in BC.

The graphic video (link shared below, with a warning), which has appeared online and has garnered over a million hits, shows two hunters tracking a grizzly and shooting it a number of times from a far distance as it attempts to get away.

The bear is seen tumbling down a cliff, leaving a trail of blood behind it, while the two man laugh and make light of the situation. The location of the video hasn’t been confirmed.

Now, critics are calling for an end to the trophy hunt. BC issues more than 3,000 tags for grizzly bear hunting every year.

Even many professional hunters aren’t happy with the video, condemning the act as cruel. But they say overall, hunting the animals is humane and justifiable, as many make use of most or all of the bear after its death.

Alberta ended its grizzly hunt in 2006, while BC First Nations have also banned trophy hunting among their members and go so far as to try to disrupt others who are hunting the animals.

The grizzly bear hunt in BC opens on October 1st.
