Petronas confirms safety audit, says it ensures welfare of people, environment

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Malaysian energy giant Petronas says it introduced a program to improve health and safety at its global oil and gas operations following an audit that reported serious safety issues at its offshore operations.

The state-owned company says that a 2013 asset-integrity audit included recommendations to address gaps and enhance safety standards, which Petronas says it moved to address.

Petronas Executive Vice President Wee Yiaw Hin says in a statement the audit prompted the company to implement a program to resolve issues and ensure the safety of people, the environment and facilities.

The audit reported competence and training issues with employees and made numerous references to corrosion issues threatening the structural integrity of facilities.

Petronas plans to build a $36-billion liquefied natural gas export terminal at Lelu Island near Prince Rupert on British Columbia’s northwest coast.

BC’s Natural Gas Development Minister Rich Coleman was not immediately available for comment.
