NDP Leader Tom Mulcair promises $1.8 billion towards health-care for seniors

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The New Democrats say they’d spend $1.8 billion over four years to help provinces bolster health-care for seniors if they form the next government.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says the funding is designed to expand home care for 41,000 seniors, create 5,000 more nursing beds and improve palliative care services.

At an event today in Vancouver, Mulcair said the NDP would work closely with the provinces to roll out the plan. Mulcair suggests Stephen Harper’s Conservatives have abandoned a leadership role on health.

And he says he plans to release more details on his health-care plan ahead of Thursday’s leaders’ debate in Calgary. Mulcair is trying to shore up support in BC, where the party is hoping to win as many as 24 seats on October 19th.

The Liberals are calling the NDP plan for seniors unrealistic and say it can’t be done if the party wants to eliminate the deficit in six months. They say his plan will have to involve cuts to certain sectors, yet the NDP haven’t said which ones will see the axe.

Vancouver Centre candidate Hedy Fry says Mulcair talks a good game, but there’s no substance behind it.
