Professor shot and killed at Delta State University

JACKSON, Miss. – An official says a professor has been shot and killed inside an office at Delta State University in Mississippi.

Murray Roark, a deputy coroner in Bolivar County, says the professor killed Monday was a white man in his 50s. He would not identify the professor, who was killed in an office inside Jobe Hall.

University spokeswoman Jennifer Farish also declined to identify the dead person, saying it was still an “active situation.” It’s unclear whether anyone else is wounded.

The school was placed on lockdown when the shooting was first reported Monday. Students, faculty and staff were told to take shelter and stay away from windows.

The 3,500-student university is in Cleveland, in Mississippi’s Delta region near the Arkansas-Mississippi state line.
