LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS 1130) – A number of local swing ridings appear to be leaning NDP, according to new polling numbers compiled by a group trying to encourage strategic voting to remove the Conservatives from power.
The numbers from LeadNow indicate Tom Mulcair’s party is leading in Vancouver-Granville, Port Moody Coquitlam, and Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge.
“In the Lower Mainland, we’ve got Port Moody-Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge showing a fairly similar story, with the NDP at 41 per cent,” says Matthew Carroll with LeadNow.
Vancouver-Granville is particularly interesting because it’s a new riding.
“Our most recent polls show the NDP in the lead with 36 [per cent],” says Rachel Tetrault with LeadNow. “Then the Liberals and the Conservatives are neck-and-neck with the Liberals with 30 [per cent], and the Conservatives with 29 [per cent].”
On the Island, there’s an interesting race in North Island-Powell River, where the Green Party’s growing popularity could lead to vote-splitting among left-leaning voters.
“We’ve been hearing that the Greens might be up in Nanaimo-Ladysmith, and what we’re seeing is the NDP still ahead at 34 per cent, but with the Greens neck-and-neck with the Conservatives,” says Carroll.
