Poll suggests Conservatives pulling ahead

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The stalemate is over. With less than two weeks to go until election day, new national numbers show the deadlock between the three main parties has finally been broken, but your vote could still be critical.

The latest Mainstreet/Postmedia poll suggests the Conservatives have pulled way ahead, and the jump in support seems to have come at the expense of the NDP.

“As the campaign enters the final two weeks, the Conservatives (37%) have opened up a substantial lead over the Liberals (29%). The Liberals have now also opened up a substantial lead over the NDP who have dropped to just 24% among decided and leaning voters,” says Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research.

“In recent weeks we have looked at some regions and provinces and those results seemed to point to a significant decrease in support for the NDP and a rise for both the Conservatives and Liberals. When we look across the national picture, we find these regional gains have favoured the Conservatives.”

In BC, there has been a shift as well. Early in the campaign, the NDP commanded a significant lead but the party has slipped somewhat (33%) on the West Coast as the Conservatives (29%) and the surging Liberals (28%) have made gains among decided and leaning voters.

But Maggi says BC is still expected to be the battleground of the federal election. “British Columbia will be home to the most close three way races we can expect to see on October 19th.”
