Latest polls show swing in support toward the Liberals

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We are now into the final week of campaigning ahead of federal election day, and a swing in support cross the country has resulted in a lot more Liberal-red showing up on the map, including in Metro Vancouver.

The latest numbers from ThreeHundredEight.com — a poll aggregator which gives riding-by-riding projections — shows support swinging to the Liberals from the North Shore to South Surrey with the NDP maintaining a core of support from East Vancouver through Burnaby and into Coquitlam.

Some polls have suggested strategic voters are now making final choices.

“It appeared to be an NDP-Conservative race, but we’ve seen the fortunes of the NDP slide a little bit, maybe having something to do with what’s going on around the country with the niqab debate, but also I think the NDP simply peaked early,” says Max Cameron, a political science professor at UBC.

“There is this ongoing concern about splitting the vote. For voters whose primary concern is to get anyone but Harper elected, they will be looking to which of the Liberal or NDP candidate is the best challenger to the Conservative in that riding.”

The Conservatives are still holding on to support through much of the Fraser Valley.

A recent Forum poll suggested more than a quarter of Canadians are voting for “the party that can defeat the government” (28%), rather than voting for “the party they believe in” (64%).
