PITT MEADOWS/MAPLE RIDGE (NEWS 1130) – It was an amazing win for the Liberals in Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge.

The riding had been Conservative since it was created in 1997. The Liberals won by roughly 2,000 votes over the second-place Conservatives.

“Amazing! We were up against all the odds,” says incoming MP Dan Ruimy, who owns a book store-coffee shop.

He says his job serving java was instrumental in getting him elected.

“I’ve laughed with my customers. I’ve cried with my customers. We talked politics. Canadians want government to listen. That’s what I did. I didn’t run around. I sat with people — half an hour here, half an hour there.”

And so ends the Conservative run in this suburb of 94,000 people. The previous MP, Randy Kamp, won four consecutive elections, but he decided to opt out earlier this year.
