Only 11 applications make it through first round of medical marijuana dispensary process

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Round one of Vancouver’s medical marijuana dispensary application process is complete.

Of the 176 applications sent into the city, only 11 met zoning and distance requirements from schools and other pot shops.

Letters will be sent to another 30 applicants that met zoning requirements but not distance requirements and will be later evaluated by city staff.

Don Briere, owner of the local Weeds Glass and Gifts, says there are people who need access to medical marijuana. “The people who are in walkers, wheelchairs and everything else, they are going to have great difficulty getting to these places.”

One of Briere’s nine locations moved on to the next step.

He believes other owners will take this fight to the courtroom, where he hopes the federal government can step in before this decision is final.

Briere says this decision will mean marijuana might move from well-regulated dispensaries, “pushed back onto the streets in the black market, powdery mildew, mold and robbery and everything else that goes with it.”
