UNBC claims top spot in Maclean’s university rankings in primarily undergrad category

PRINCE GEORGE (NEWS 1130) – The University of Northern British Columbia has claimed the number one spot in Maclean’s university rankings in the primarily undergraduate category.

When it comes to starting off your post-secondary journey, UNBC offers the benefit of smaller class sizes, which president Daniel Weeks says sets it apart from some larger universities, where classes in cavernous auditoriums can sometimes leave students feeling less than connected.

“We have a very good student-faculty ratio,” says Weeks. “Students — there’s one measure where they score on what’s the likelihood of your professor knowing your name? We do very, very well on that.”

Maclean’s included a student satisfaction survey as part of its approach this year, which Weeks feels pushed UNBC to pole position, with pupils giving high ratings to the school’s instructors, mental health services and extracurricular activities.

“The other thing that [student] quickly come to realize is that what a beautiful city Prince George is,” says Weeks. “What an incredibly great place it is to live. So many of our graduates after graduating UNBC stay here.”

BC fared well in these rankings, with Simon Fraser University taking top spot in the comprehensive category, which also factors in graduate studies, research and professional programs.
