Remembrance Day could drive BC shoppers to Washington

VANCOUVER  (NEWS1130) — The Canadian dollar may be lower than it was a year ago, but those heading over the Washington State border Wednesday may still be fighting with a big crowd of other Canadians.

The Veterans Day holiday in the US lines up with Canada’s Remembrance Day on November 11.

About a half hours’ drive south of the BC border, Guy Occhiogrosso with the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber Of Commerce, said the holiday in both countries is a perfect storm.

“Work places will actually be off, so the retailers respond to that by having a sale,” Occhiogrosso said. “We do tend to see a higher volume of traffic and I would say for this [holiday] in particular, we are now officially in that holiday shopping season.”

He said the travel stateside from the BC/Washington border is down from this time last year by about 20 per cent, but those travelers seem to be spending more money.
