Bus goes into a sinkhole in Burnaby

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Some people on a transit bus in Burnaby got a scare this morning.

A sinkhole opened up on Production Way, and a bus got stuck in it. The road is closed to traffic between Broadway and Eastlake Drive.

Ann Drennan with TransLink says the sinkhole north of Lougheed is quite large. “It goes from one side of Production Way to the other, which means that the sidewalks in that area are unusable, which is why the pedestrian traffic has been shut down.”

“One of the Coast Mountain buses was on the route at the time and got stuck in part of the sinkhole. The bus operator and the passengers were removed from the bus.”

“There are no injuries. Damage to the bus will have to be assessed,” she says.

Production Way will remain closed to traffic between Broadway and Eastlake Drive through the weekend and into next week as crews work to repair the sinkhole.

Bus routes #136 and #145 are being diverted.
