Environmentalists applaud decision to ban tanker traffic on BC’s north coast

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Conservationists are hailing a decision by the new Liberal government that will stop the Northern Gateway pipeline from Alberta to BC.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking action on two things he promised British Columbians in the election campaign, he will re-open the Kitsilano coast guard base in Vancouver and ban oil tanker traffic on BC’s north coast.

Trudeau has included the directives in a mandate letter to the federal minister responsible for fisheries and oceans and the minister of transport.

The two pledges are significant in the West, where environmental and safety advocates have decried the former Conservative government’s handling of marine issues.

Gerald Graham, an expert on oil spills, says it will mean that Northern Gateway will never happen. However, a spokesman for Northern Gateway says the company will remain committed to what it calls essential infrastructure.
