What goes into preparing for a TEDxVancouver talk?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – TEDxVancouver has close to two dozen speakers spreading their passion for a wide range of innovative topics. But what is it actually like to try to explain your life’s work in 18 minutes?

UBC professor Marina Adshade says TED speakers take a lot of time to write, re-write and re-write again. “To an audience, the 17 or 18 minutes seems like a long time, in fact I don’t think most people even watch the whole video when they watch online but as a speaker, the time goes incredibly quickly. You’re starting and then, before you know it, you’re finished and that little clock in front of you is counting down.”

Adshade adds TED talkers have to choose every word wisely. “It’s not free-wheeling…and the reason is that you have this condensed amount of time in which to speak. If you have a lot to say, which most of us do, you really have to organize yourself. It’s really just working on your talk, practicing it, revising it.”
