Black Friday vs Boxing Day: Which deals are better?

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Do you have big plans to hit the stores on Black Friday or will you wait until Boxing Day to get your hands on the best deals of the holiday shopping season?

A new study is comparing the two, looking at which day will leave you with a little more money in your wallet.

Colliers International looked at the discounts advertised for 44 products in flyers for each day. Senior Consultant David Bell says 36 per cent of the products were discounted more heavily on Boxing Day.

Sixteen per cent were better deals on Black Friday.

“Boxing Day tends to win out in terms of discounts on lower priced merchandise — that’s merchandise under $100 — and also electronics and appliances,” he adds.

“Merchandise priced over $100 though, it’s roughly equal. Black Friday had come in with a slight edge, I think, at 31 per cent discount, versus Boxing Day at 30 per cent.”

Bell says when it comes to retail sales growth for 2015, BC and Ontario will lead the country. Sales in the two provinces together make up almost half of the total sales volume in Canada.

Negative growth is expected for Alberta and Saskatchewan.
