Future of Vancouver’s only heavy metal record store in doubt

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Local metalheads are joining forces to try and save the one store dedicated solely to their favourite genre of the music.

Barring an 11th hour sale, Vancouver’s Scrape Records is set to shut down for good sometime in the New Year.

“If I don’t have some serious, serious offers that, in my gut, I feel, without a doubt, [are] going to happen by the end of December, the store will be closed at some point in January,” explains owner J.J. Cathcart.

There is nothing wrong with the business, Cathcart says it’s simply time for him to move on.

“It’s an easy decision if no customers are coming by, I’m staring out the window waiting for people to come in, having a hard time paying the bills, rent is going through the roof,” he says. “But none of that’s the case.”

Cathcart, who has run the store for the past 18 years, is also encouraged by customers who don’t want to let it go without a fight. “It’s been overwhelming the response, and people are being really positive and supportive, and we’ll see what happens.”

“It looks optimistic, but until a deal is done, a deal is not done,” he warns.

An “investors meeting” is set for this afternoon between 4:00 and 6:00 at the Waves Coffee House at Commercial Drive and 3rd Avenue.
