DTES meal token program expands to include clothing for the less fortunate

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The organizers of a very popular meal token program on the Downtown Eastside are expanding their charitable efforts.

This week, Save On Meats and vintage retailer F as in Frank have teamed up to help provide warm clothing for the homeless.

Save On Meats owner Mark Brand says you can provide the less fortunate a pound of clothing from “The Rag Machine at Main and Hastings.

“You… purchase a token for $5. You can hand it out to somebody who can then go shopping for something that they would like to wear to stay warm, or something that fits their style,” explains Save On Meats owner Mark Brand.

“For the one pound, you can get a scarf, mitts, and a hat. Or you could get three long-sleeved t-shirts or a sweater or a light jacket, etc. We just wanted to make another way for the community that’s been so incredibly supportive to engage its residents.”

Brand says 90,000 $2 meal tokens have been redeemed at Save On Meats since the program was launched three years ago.
