Vancouver’s mayor among world leaders gathering to talk about climate change

PARIS, FRANCE (NEWS 1130) – The mayors of the world’s top cities are meeting in Paris today to discuss what they can do to battle climate change. Vancouver’s mayor is among them, and talks about he’s taking away from the discussions.

According to the C40, a group made up of the world’s mega-cities, 70 per cent of emissions come from urban centres.

Given that, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson says it’s vital cities don’t wait for national governments to make needed changes.

“With transit investments — we need partners on that both federally and provincially. We can take action, taking care of our land use and making sure we have dense, complete communities so more people can live where they work.”

“Cities are really essential to dealing with climate change given that most of the emissions and the majority of the population in the world are in cities. So, we’ve got to deal with it on our doorstep and in our streets, that’s real life.”

As for what he’s learned, Robertson adds he’s been exposed to some interesting ideas, including a carbon positive Swedish housing development.
