Local politicians happy with Paris development

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – BC politicians are taking to social media to applaud the Paris climate agreement.

Premier Christy Clark tweeted that the world came together for the agreement and BC is ready to lead and help reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson wrote he was thankful that nations agreed to fight climate change and end the fossil fuel era, and vowed his city would drive the pace.

And Green Party leader and Saanich-Gulf Islands MP Elizabeth May said the world is grateful the Canadian election was in October — as the new Liberal government helped set the ambitious 1.5 degree target.

The international climate agreement reached in Paris is being hailed by environmental groups.

Sierra Club BC says the deal is historic and heralds the end of the fossil fuel era.

ForestEthics Advocacy director Karen Mahon was part of the Canadian delegation and says the commitment of all participants to work day and night to hammer out details was extraordinary.

She says the agreement means the Canadian government needs to move quickly and decisively to develop an action plan so it can keep its promise to the world.
