Mount Seymour preparing to open main chairlift tomorrow

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The conditions on top of Mount Seymour are being described as a total turnaround from last year.

In the last two days, the mountain has had 57 centimetres of snow; that’s prompting staff to prepare to get the main chair going as soon as tomorrow, says Simon Whitehead, who speaks for Mount Seymour.

“The conditions compared to last year is night and day,” says Whitehead. “It was very, very challenging last year. We didn’t turn on our learning area until December 29. We brought that online a couple of weeks ago.”

Whitehead says the season as a whole is expected to be average — but given the main chair was open for just a dozen days last time around, average sounds pretty good.

“We’re turning on our main chair tomorrow, which is very, very exciting,” says Whitehead. “We’re all looking forward to a fantastic season.”

Whitehead said it’s been a case of almost full renewals, given the mountain offered 88 per cent credit for passholders who experienced a shortened season last winter.

Good ski conditions are expected to continue

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Russ Lacate says it’s been a great start on hills and it’s expected to keep up for the foreseeable future.

“You’ve probably heard Whistler-Blackcomb received upwards of 40 cm of fresh snow, while the Lower Mainland was being bombarded by rain and wind all over again this weekend. More importantly, the local hills cooled off just enough; that lower freezing level helped contribute between 30 and 70 cm on the North Shore slopes,” he tells us.

“And it’s still cold at higher elevations now; you can enjoy some sun on those snow-covered slopes today and Wednesday. There’s even a light dusting of new snow in the forecast tomorrow!”
