Canucks fall to the Panthers in a shootout

SUNRISE, FL (NEWS 1130) – Brandon Pirri and Aleksander Barkov scored for Florida in the shootout as the Vancouver Canucks fell 5-4 to Roberto Luongo and the Panthers. Luongo stopped two-of-three in the shootout.

It was a back-and-forth game, as the Canucks led twice in the first period, and the Panthers held a pair of leads in the second. Jannik Hansen opened the scoring for Vancouver 6:32 into the game, as he beat Luongo with a slapshot to hit the 10-goal mark on the season. Shawn Thornton responded for Florida just under six minutes later.

Vancouver went back in front at the 15:29 mark. Sven Baertschi finished off a pass from Bo Horvat to make it 2-1, as the young duo combined for a goal for the second game in a row. Veteran forward Jaromir Jagr tallied on a Panthers’ powerplay with just 13 seconds left in the period to tie the game again. That was a special goal for the 43-year-old, as it was the 732nd of his career, which moves him past Marcel Dionne, into fourth place on the NHL’s all-time list.

Florida’s Vincent Trochek and Vancouver’s Derek Dorsett traded goals 31 seconds apart in the early stages of the second period, and then the Panthers took their second lead of the game on an Aaron Ekblad powerplay marker, which was set-up by Jagr.

The Canucks tied the game for the fourth time, as Daniel Sedin finished off a pretty give-and-go with Hansen for his team-leading 15th goal of the season to make it 4-4.

After Pirri and Jared McCann traded goal in the first round of the shootout, Canucks goalie Ryan Miller skated to the bench with an apparent injury. He was replaced in net by Jacob Markstrom. Markstrom stopped Jonathan Huberdeau before being beaten by Barkov, and Luongo turned aside attempts from Radim Vrbata and Baertschi to seal the win against his former team.

The Canucks say Miller left the game due to cramping, and he is expected to be fine. He made 38 saves through regulation and overtime. Markstrom took the loss to fall to 1-3-3 on the season.

The Canucks have lost four-of-five games on their road trip, and have now lost nine times in either overtime or a shootout this season. They wrap-up their trip on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
