Energy minister: it’s ridiculous for unions to say BC workers won’t get Site C jobs

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The province is defending itself against criticism from unions that BC workers will not get jobs on the Site C Dam project.

Yesterday, BC Building Trades unions voiced their concern, saying our province’s workers will be cut out of the project.

Energy Minister Bill Bennett says the accusation is ridiculous.

“The BC Building Trades didn’t get this latest contract and they’re disappointed, they’re frustrated by that. But that doesn’t mean that British Columbians won’t get a chance to work on Site C,” he says. “There are other unions that will be hiring literally hundreds, if not, thousands of people from British Columbia to work on Site C, so I think a little sour grapes from the BC Building Trades.”

Bennett says Petrawest is doing the hiring and its CEO is born and raised in Fort St. John.

“He will be responsible for 100 per cent of the hiring. He is going to do everything he possibly can to make sure British Columbians get an opportunity at Site C before anyone else.”
