Scam circulating by group claiming to be Vancouver firefighters

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services and the International Association of Firefighters Local 18 are warning you about a possible phone scam going around the Lower Mainland.

Robert Weeks is president of the Firefighters Association and its charitable society. He says a group of people may be trying to solicit charitable donations by making phone calls to residents – something the association nor its partners ever do.

“We put thousands of dollars and thousands of volunteer hours back into our community, and we have an organization or group of people that’s attempting to usurp that credit for their own benefit”, says Weeks.

“I think it’s sad. I mean I don’t necessarily believe it reflects on us but I certainly think they’re trying to use the good name of fire fighters and solicit donations off the backs of the good work we do in the community.”

To stop the scammers, the first responders are trying to spread the word through their websites, media, and the police. Fire and Rescue Services want to reminds you not give out any personal information if you receive one of these calls, and to notify the police or fire department right away.
