Dog isolated in Richmond after attack

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — The Rottweiler-husky cross who bit a young woman more than 100 times Wednesday is being housed at the Richmond Animal Protection Society.

Eyal Lichtmann, CEO of RAPS, said the dog came to them in a healthy condition and will be treated well.

“The dog is doing just fine. The dog is in isolation at the shelter. He’s being properly taken care of, like we would take care of any animal, except that he’s isolated from all the other animals and from people. He’s got very specific handlers with him,” She said.

The case is unusual, according to Lichtmann, and an investigation will look into any external factors that may have provoked the animal.

“There’s a lot of information that needs to be gathered here and there’s a whole process that needs to be gone through, to figure out exactly what happened here – why the dog reacted the way he did.”

Lichtmann said city officials plan to get together Monday to discuss next steps. He said the city will have the ultimate decision whether or not to put the animal down.

The mauling happened in a Richmond home on Williams Road, not far from Garden City Road. Police said the 21-year-old woman was trying to protect her three-year-old nephew from being bit and her sister was also hurt. The dog apparently belongs to one of the sisters’ boyfriends. Family of the women posted on social media that she is now recovering from surgery following the attack.
