British Columbians have til end of month to comment on trophy hunt

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – News that British Columbians now have until the end of the month to voice their opinions on a proposal to expand the trophy hunts of both wolves and grizzlies in the Peace Region is being welcomed by an animal research group.

The Raincoast Conservation Foundation had been critical the input period happened during the Christmas period.

Chris Genovali with the foundation hopes people will take advantage of the extension of time.

He says the proposal to triple the number of grizzlies killed and to open up the wolf-kill to year-round is based on flimsy numbers.

“These supposed policies are not based on any sound science. In fact they are unscientific, they’re unethical and they’re indicative of a political decision making process.”

He says the province doesn’t really have a good sense of how big the wolf population is, which, surprisingly, is roughly half that of the grizzly population.

And he doesn’t buy the province’s argument that the trophy hunt industry generates much needed money for conservation.

“Most of the grizzlies and wolves that will be killed in the Peace Region if this proposal goes forward will be done by resident trophy hunters – British Columbians. There’s not a heck of a lot of money generated by resident trophy hunters.”

People can give their two cents worth on the wolf trophy hunt and the grizzly trophy hunt until January 31.
