DELTA (NEWS 1130) — The sandbags and concrete blocks are out and people on the waterfront in Delta and Tsawwassen are watching the winds closely.
A King Tide is scheduled to hit Boundary Bay at 8 a.m. that could rise several meters and bring a week of large swells to the area.
Delta Mayor Lois Jackson says “We’re all watching the wind.”
Jackson says they learned a lot from last year’s king tides when there was a dike breach and a private seawall collapsed.
“We’re watching for three things, of course the tide, second of all what direction the wind is coming from and how fast is it going and how long has it been blowing. Obviously we try to keep everybody abreast of what’s happening.”
Jackson says the severity of the high tide will all depend on the weather.
“We set up big electronic bulletin boards on our access, particularly down to the beach if there is a probability of big winds and problems then people know exactly on a momentary basis what position were in.”
The mayor says they have been getting ready for this King Tide event since November and are as prepared as they can be.
