Economic optimism dropping off: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Across the province, our optimism about the economy is dropping off, according to a new poll.

Forty-three per cent of those polled by Insights West say they will cut back on buying new clothes and more than one in three say they’ll be travelling less.

“What we see here is a really big drop,” says pollster Mario Canseco. “We’re seeing two out of five BC residents are saying they’re not going to be spending money on new clothes, that they’re going to be dining out less often.”

And that’s down to less than half of respondents describing the economy is good — down from two in three people saying that a year ago.

“When that starts to pile up and you compare that to the numbers we had back in November 2014, you start to see that there’s a real bit of uneasiness on the part of BC residents to figure out what is going to happen with the economy,” says Canseco.

That’s pollster Mario Canseco with Insights West, who says the amount people describing the economy as poor has risen to 48 per cent, up from one in four feeling that way a year ago.
