Record number of Canadians bought a car last year

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – British Columbia had Canada’s biggest auto-sales gain last year, and Scotiabank predicts an increase this year as the province’s economic activity rises.

Scotiabank economist and auto industry specialist Carlos Gomes says BC had a gain, “I believe it was in the order of about seven per cent, which was more than double the overall increase.”

He says a record 207,000 vehicles were sold in BC last year. Gomes adds that BC has “strengthening exports” and “the strongest job market in Canada,” the latter led by construction.

On top of that he predicts “Vehicle demand in BC will also be bolstered by the largest intra-provincial population inflow in decades.”

Scotiabank says nationwide auto sales were up a better-than-expected three per cent to a record 1.9 million.
