City of Vancouver ready to hand out permits for existing pot shops

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The City of Vancouver is set to hand out permits for already-operating pot shops this month.

Councillor Kerry Jang says stores that fail to get city approval will be shut down. “We’ll start with the closing of pot shops that didn’t meet our test by the end of April.”

He says the city had no choice, given the lack of federal action on the issue.

“This is exactly why, whether it’s the old government or the new one currently. There are no real laws on the books and we’ve had an explosion of these pot shops in the City of Vancouver.”

To get a permit, pot store-owners have to pay $30,000 for a specialized business licence and cannot open up within 300-metres of schools or community centres.
