Big city mayors leave meeting with Trudeau happy about what they heard

OTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – You could see some new roads, bridges and other infrastructure projects pop up soon.

It appears Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and his other big city counterparts heard what they wanted in meetings with the federal government.

The prime minister says his meeting today was to help repair a long-neglected relationship, and he seems to have made a good impression.

Justin Trudeau he’s continuing to work on freeing up billions of dollars to spend on much-needed projects in cities across the country, “to create jobs in the short-term, but also to create economic growth in the medium and long-term.”

That was music to the ears of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi.

“I have to say, the federal government gets it. They really understand the need to invest in the long-term stuff, balanced off with the need to get stuff built right away,” says Nenshi.

Trudeau is promising to be flexible and fair. “Ensuring that we get the money flowing in a responsible and rapid way is a priority for all of us.”

The mayors are very happy the government plans to cut restrictions that are traditionally attached to this funding. Toronto Mayor John Tory expects to see money flowing through his city very soon.

“And rightly so,” says Tory. “We don’t have time anymore to take years and years to argue about the details of these programs.”

The new infrastructure plan will be announced in the budget and shovels could be in the ground this spring.
