VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – As we mark the family day long weekend, activists are calling on the provincial government to make changes to the foster care system.
The majority of British Columbians are in favour of supporting young people until the age of 25 after they age out of care.
Mark Gifford with the Vancouver Foundation commissioned the poll by Insights West.
He attributes the results to people being more aware of the high costs of living as well as several high-profile deaths of kids in government care last year.
“They get upset by it. Folks are upset, thinking that young people who we’ve given the promise of family to as foster kids are denied that as soon as they turn 19.”
Gifford hopes the Ministry of Children and Family Development views the results as good news because it shows the public is interested in making investments.
About 70% of British Columbians think both the government and the community are not doing enough to support young people who have been in foster care.
