Canucks fall to the Maple Leafs

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – On a night that the Canucks wore their 1990’s skate jerseys, Toronto won at Rogers Arena for the first time since 2003 as Mark Arcobello had two goals in a 5-2 win for the Maple Leafs.

Daniel Sedin opened the scoring for the Canucks 3:18 into the second period with his 22nd goal of the season. Henrik Sedin forced a turnover down low and then Jannik Hansen got the puck to Daniel in the slot. He beat James Reimer with a quick wristshot up high.

The lead didn’t last though as Arcobello scored two goals for Toronto just 17 seconds apart. The first of the two came only 1:09 after the Daniel Sedin tally. The goals were the first two of the season for Arcobello.

Leafs rookie Brendan Leipsic benefited from a lucky bounce to pot his first career goal in his first career game. Early in the third period, a point shot hit Canucks’ defenseman Matt Bartkowski. The puck went up into the air, and Ryan Miller lost sight of it, allowing Leipsic to knock it home as it fell to the ice to make it 3-1 for the visitors.

Sven Baertschi pulled Vancouver back within a goal with just over a minute to play, but Toronto’s Brad Boyes and Leo Komarov added empty-netters to put it out of reach.

Despite the loss, it was a milestone night for Canucks captain Henrik Sedin. He passed Trevor Linden for the franchise lead in games played with 1,141.

The Canucks were coming off back-to-back road wins in Colorado and Arizona and were trying to put together their first three-game winning streak of the season. They continue their homestand on Monday against the Minnesota Wild.
