New protections for BC cats, dogs in wake of animal abuse cases

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Cat and dog breeders in this province will now be held to a higher standard.

The BC government is bringing in new rules under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, recognizing the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s Codes of Practice.

Taking action against irresponsible operators is the goal, says Premier Christy Clark.

“We are going to hold breeders to meeting that code of practice. They set out clear guidelines for the quality of care, for housing, for food and water, ventilation, and for record keeping.”

Clark adds future legislation is also on the way for every operator in BC.

“We are going to consult a little bit more with the SPCA, breeders and other stakeholder to make sure that we get it absolutely right. Legislation is going to require that there be licensing for every cat and dog breeding facility in the province.”

That could come into effect as early as next year. This announcement follows two large recent SPCA seizures of neglected animals in the Lower Mainland.
