VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How likely is it that charges could be laid locally against the mother and uncle of a Maple Ridge woman killed in India 16 years ago.
The pair has had their extradition to India overturned in a split decision over concerns they could be tortured.
25-year-old Jassi Sidhu’s body was found in a canal in Punjab after she married a rickshaw driver against her family’s will.
NEWS 1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray thinks it’s unlikely the mother and uncle could be charged here.
“I’m not aware of what offence they could be charged here with unless some actions took place here. Planning or certain aspects of the place actually took place in Canada, I would think it would be extremely unlikely they could be charged here for a murder that took place in India.”
Jassi Sidhu’s husband was beaten as well but he survived.
