Undercover RCMP terror operation racked up $900,000 in overtime

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An undercover terrorism operation that netted a pair of former drug addicts racked up just over $900,000 in police overtime expenses.

Documents obtained by The Canadian Press through an access-to-information request reveal the RCMP paid at least 200 people, mostly police officers, about $910,000 in OT.

The operation lasted five months in 2013 and led to the arrests of John Nuttall and Amanda Korody.

The common-law spouses were found guilty last year of plotting to blow up the BC legislature on Canada Day in 2013. Their convictions have yet to be entered while defence lawyers argue police entrapped the pair.

Simon Fraser University criminologist Rob Gordon says these kinds of anti-terrorism operations are on the rise in Canada. He says that’s partly to do with police agencies coming under increasing government pressure to be proactive about terrorism.

The RCMP declined comment about the cost and frequency of undercover terrorism operations.
