Scammers took tens of millions of dollars from Canadians in 2015: BBB

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has released its top 10 list of scams for 2015.

Along with calls from fake relatives, and free trial traps, were calls from fraudsters claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency.

That scam finished number one of on the top 10 list.

BBB President Danielle Primrose says while it took 2.9 million from people’s pockets, the total amount of money taken was much more.

“According to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre, the good news is that Canadians lost less money in 2015 than they did in 2014. Just over $61 million was lost last year.”

Primrose says many of these scammers used online information to individualize their attacks.

“Social media is very prevalent now. You really want to pay attention to what you’re putting on social media as well as your privacy and protection settings.”
