Bad owners, not bad dogs to blame for attacks: poll

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Blame the owner, not the breed.

A recent survey that finds we feel banning certain dog breeds is not the way to cut the number of attacks.

While more than 40 per cent asked by the Angus Reid Institute feel some breeds are inherently more aggressive and dangerous, nearly 60 per cent feel bad owners are to blame for dog attacks.

Shachi Kurl with the pollster says there is also a clear generational divide on the issue.

“The younger you are, the more likely you are to place this issue squarely at the feet of dog owners and that is something that is also noticeable depending whether or not you are a dog owner.”

“There is a significant number of Canadians who still see it is the dog that creates the dangerous incidents more than the owners, so about four in Canadians,” adds Kurl.

Two out of three Canadians also support requiring muzzles for certain breeds of dangerous dogs, while fewer than two-in-five support outright breed bans.
