VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s time to talk about home ownership in Vancouver. That is the message from a motion coming to city council this week.

She says the rental market is important, but young people need the promise of being able to move up in the housing market to keep them in Vancouver.

“This motion that I put forward will help to fast-track affordable home ownership and also to look at other options, like microsuites for those people who just need to get their foot in the door of the market here in Vancouver.”

De Genova says we need to look at housing in a holistic way to address everyone in the city.

“We need to look at housing for all different types of individuals and families and their needs. Many families no longer want to live in a single-family home, that used to be the dream. Now that dream is a row home or a townhouse.”

She believes the Vancouver Charter may also have to be adjusted.

Last year her plans to explore housing options passed unanimously.
