VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Construction of a major new medical centre in Vancouver for BC’s sickest kids and women is almost finished.

All that’s left is the electrical, plumbing, and finishing.

The new building at the BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital complex is expected to open in the fall of 2017 and will include an emergency department, a pediatric intensive care unit, and a high-risk labour and delivery suite.

The hospital structure is now complete explains BC Health Minister Terry Lake. “With 32,600 cubic metres of concrete, 4,600 tonnes of rebar and with that impressive amount of material in place, the Teck Acute Care Centre’s muscular skeletal system if you like from foundation to root.”

Lake notes today is about more than just concrete and steel. “It’s about being able to get the first glimpse of what the future of future care will look like for some of the most critically ill and medically complex patients in British Columbia.”

Donors contributed $150 million to the project.
