Hockey fans scoring in other ways without a Canadian team in the NHL playoffs

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Ah spring! It’s when a young Canucks fan’s thoughts turn to love because what the heck else are they going to do without a single Canadian team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this year?

As cities in American NHL markets get set for the start of the NHL post-season tonight, the silver lining for fans north of the border is they are more likely to score in a different kind of arena. A survey from the dating site Match.com finds 21 per cent of Canadians say they date less during a home team run for the Stanley Cup.

“When their favourite team goes to the playoffs, it impacts their love life greatly,” agrees relationship therapist Kimberly Moffit.

So, with a lack of Canadian content this year and fewer playoff beards, hockey fans should be able to capitalize on more opportunities for a little lovin’.

“According to the study, 80 per cent of Canadian women actually do prefer their dates to be clean shaven. This might be a good thing for ladies all around,” she tells NEWS 1130.

But when it comes to making a play in the dating arena, Moffit says Canucks fans have some trust issues due to years of playoff heartbreak. “They ultimately want someone they can feel comfortable with and confide in. That is the number one quality they are looking for in a partner.”

At least they’re faring better than fans of the Calgary Flames, who start off hot and then let the sizzle fizzle. “They are the least likely fans to get a second date and second dates are where people really tend to connect and get into deeper conversations. I think that’s where they are falling short in the dating arena.”

Long-suffering Leafs fans also have more to lament than just the state of hockey in Toronto. “The study finds they have gone on the least amount of first dates this year,” says Moffit. “They may be trying their hand at the dating world but they are really not able to close the deal.”

Speaking of closing the deal, Match.com says fans of the Ottawa Senators had the least amount of sex last year. “And 61 per cent of Edmonton Oilers fans have actually had no sex at all in the past year. They’re experiencing a drop in success, kind of like their team.”

But it’s not all bad news. After more than a decade without a team, Jets fans have developed the tendency to hold on. With their average date lasting two hours and 10 minutes, Jets fans go on the longest first dates.
