Local farmers welcoming early-season warm weather

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We had a taste of warm weather a week ago and more is in the forecast. That’s welcome news for those growing food right here in Vancouver.

An early start to the warm weather is always good news, says Lissa Goldstein with Sole Food Street Farms.

“It just means we can get started a little earlier. The soil dries out a little bit faster, plants grow a bit quicker — you can plant things earlier than you normally would have.”

“The harvest starts a bit earlier. Sometimes, that means the harvest on certain things ends earlier; sometimes it means it lasts longer. Either way… it means a longer growing season, so the food production would increase,” she adds.

Goldstein notes things probably didn’t warm up early enough for farmers to consider a second round of growing, but we could see a larger amount of crops when it comes time to harvest in the fall.
