Canadian Red Cross helping in Ecuador earthquake recovery efforts

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Canadian Red Cross is now working with its counterparts in Ecuador to help with recovery efforts following the 7.8-magnitude earthquake over the weekend that has killed hundreds of people and injured thousands of others.

The call is now out for Canadians to donate.

Lise Anne Pierce with the Canadian Red Cross says it will be a long road ahead for rescue workers.

“We’ve seen a lot of buildings severely damaged. Roads have been cut off. Landslides are occurring. We anticipate… to see an increase in the number of injuries and lost lives,” she tells us.

The first step will be distributing emergency relief items.

“The Canadian Red Cross has opened an appeal, so that people are able to donate to this specific incident through the Red Cross network — the Canadian Red Cross working with our sister society in Ecuador,” adds Pierce.

If you would like to make a donation to the Canadian Red Cross Ecuador Earthquake Appeal, you can do so online or by calling 1-800-418-1111 or contacting your local Canadian Red Cross office.
