Gender equality and expression the centre of a petition given to the Attorney General’s office in Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Advocates and supporters have delivered a petition with more than 1,000 signatures to the Attorney General’s office in Vancouver, demanding protection for gender equality and expression.

The letter campaign began last week ahead of an equality bill being introduced Wednesday by NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert.

Chair of the Trans Alliance Society, Morgane Oger says they are not asking for special treatment, they want the same rights as everybody else as set out by the BC Human Rights Code. “In the same way that we enumerate sex, religion, place of origin and sexual orientation.”

“Explicit protection in the BC Human Rights Code is necessary as the code acts as a guide for organizations to create respectful and legal policies. Explicit protection in the code is also used to teach our children that discrimination against these protected groups is wrong.”

Vancouver drag performer Leada Stray volunteered to help gather signatures. “I went out and asked the people I met what they thought of BC’s lack of explicit protection for Trans people. Well, the people have just spoken volumes Christy Clark; I think it’s time to listen to your voters.”

“This is about people like the 12-year-old girl that I met yesterday who literally couldn’t even look me in the eye because she had been bullied so much after coming out. She came out in Alberta. She has now moved to BC because she thinks this might be a safer place.”

Today’s letters are in addition to the over 3,000 signatures collected last year by the Vancouver Pride Society.
