VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – We’re in the early part of a long stretch of warm weather, so have your thoughts turned to fresh produce yet?
Vancouver’s Farmers’ Markets opened for business this week and operations manager Roberta LaQuaglia expects things to be busy.
“We’ve seen attendance increase each year so we’d expect we’ll be busier than ever this year,” she explains. “The demand for local food continues to grow. People are looking to localize their grocery list and shop in their neighbourhood from their local producers. It’s definitely a trend.”
One she says makes even more sense given the rising price of imported produce. “Certainly the markets offer a great range of hard-to-find vegetables. Organic produce is in good supply at the markets. A lot of producers in BC grow organically and are certified organic.”
“With the price of food going up with imports, it’s a better option than ever to shop local.”
